In 2009, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association dubbed October as Dental Hygiene Month in an effort to impress the importance of good oral hygiene habits onto the public. That’s why it’s the perfect time to reflect on what you’re doing to take care of your smile now and add a couple of new and improved practices into the mix. Read on to learn five ways you can boost your oral health this Dental Hygiene Month.
Make Sure Your Brushing Technique is Correct
Did you know that there’s a proper way to brush your teeth, according to the American Dental Association? Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure you’re doing it correctly:
- Place a soft-bristled toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and move it back-and-forth in gentle, short strokes.
- Brush the visible surface of your teeth, as well as the backsides that are located within the mouth. Don’t forget to reach in the back, brushing the chewing surfaces of each of the molars.
- Brush the tongue to remove any lingering bacteria and prevent bad breath.
Stay Hydrated with Water
Do you have a habit of sipping on soda, sports drinks, or other sweetened beverages throughout the day? Try substituting water, as it can help rinse your smile of food debris, harmful bacteria, and help you produce more saliva, which can neutralize enamel-eroding acid. If you have difficulty remembering to drink water throughout the day, try starting a new habit of keeping a reuseable water bottle on you!
Use ADA-Approved Hygiene Products
Does the packaging for your toothpaste and mouthwash have an ADA Seal of Acceptance on it? If not, try to switch to products that do. In order for manufacturers to gain this seal, they must meet the ADA’s strict requirements by submitting clinical and laboratory studies to them, a detailed ingredient list, labeling claims, and evidence that the laboratories and manufacturing facilities are properly supervised. The American Dental Association will then review all of this information to ensure that it’s accurate and that the product is proven to be safe and effective for the consumer.
Maintain a Well-Balanced Diet
Many people don’t factor in their diet to their oral hygiene practices. However, your mouth is responsible for chewing and helping you digest all of the foods you eat! Harmful oral bacteria love to feed off of carbohydrates, which is why maintaining a more balanced diet and consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible can be good for your oral health.
Don’t Forget to Schedule Your Checkups & Cleanings
If you haven’t seen your dentist in longer than six months for a checkup and cleaning, schedule your appointment this Dental Hygiene Month! These visits are crucial to maintaining healthy teeth and gums, as well as spotting the early signs of common dental problems, like cavities, before they have a chance to cause permanent damage.
